Jessica Jordan Champagne Co-owner, Happy Girl Kitchens

Ten Questions for Jessica Jordan Champagne

The co-founder of Happy Girl Kitchens ruminates upon the possibilities of a parallel existence, the wonder of quince and the magic of kefir.

What do you do for a living?

Preserve the local organic harvest one jar at a time. Yes, one jar at a time. And teach others how to do it.

What would you be doing if you weren't doing that?

A full time mom, world traveler, photographer, writer, teacher, philanthropist, philosopher, outdoor adventures, become a monk or a yogi ... do you see where this is heading? There is a whole world out there.

What do you do in your free time?

What is that?

What brought you to Santa Cruz?

Karma and UCSC. The redwoods and ocean. Destiny to meet my husband.

What's your favorite street?

Any dirt road. We call them the bumpy roads.

Name something you're excited about.

Quince. I am so excited about this little antique and nearly forgotten fruit. It was the apple that Eve bit into (thank God) and I have been turning it into jelly, membrillo, drinking the juice and making lemonade.

Name a pet peeve.

Slackers.

What are you reading?

Fairy tales.

What's the most important thing you've learned in the last three years?

Stay dynamic. You are planting the seeds for the flowers that will blossom in your life right now. You are shaping your life right now. There is no tomorrow in this regard.

Recent personal food trend?

Kefir. I have been making kefir and relish its effects on my body.
