The man who brought us Kuumbwa and the Monterey Jazz Festival answers our nosy questions.


What do you do for a living?
Artistic director and co-founder of Kuumbwa Jazz. General manager of the Monterey Jazz Festival.

What would you be doing if you weren't doing that?
Teaching history and playing gigs.

What do you do in your free time?
Play music, surf and ride bikes (bicycles and motorcycles).

What brought you to Santa Cruz?
Surfing and Cabrillo College.

What's your favorite street?
52nd Street!

Name something you're excited about.
Excellent music in all its forms.

Name a pet peeve.
People that talk too much.

What are you reading?
Remix: Making Art and Commerce Thrive in the Hybrid Economy by Lawrence Lessig. It was recommended to me by Bill Putnam, one of our Kuumbwa board members.

What's the most important thing you've learned in the last three years?
Focus on the moment (although I'm still working on it).

Recent personal food trend?
The cuisine of Spain and Honey-Nut Cheerios for breakfast.
