Wine Wednesday at Seascape Beach Resort is not only a fun event to attend, but it also gives one an opportunity to taste wines that one wouldn’t normally come across. When I saw that Fred Scherrer’s Frederick William Cellars was the featured winery recently, I gathered a few friends together and we headed to the resort for a tasting.

My favorite of Scherrer’s wines that evening was a 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon, Santa Cruz Mountains ($46), a complex ruby-colored beauty with an abundance of layers and nuances.

Made with grapes from one vineyard, Scherrer says the fruit is “always excellent” and that it’s picked at the height of ripeness. “It produces a well-balanced wine with traditional Cabernet flavors and supple, smooth tannins,” says winemaker Scherrer, who also produces Merlot, Syrah and a red wine called Acuity.

Sally Locke-Paddon, hostess for Wine Wednesdays and assistant restaurant manager, is responsible for setting up this popular wine-tasting program, now in its third year. “It’s a really good deal,” says Locke-Paddon of the Wine Wednesdays. “For only $15 you get a small plate of tapas-style appetizers and a good wine-tasting experience, and it includes tax and tip as well,” she adds. “It’s turned out to be a huge success, and it’s brought locals together.”

Also, if you buy a bottle of wine that you have tasted at a Wine Wednesday event, you get a discount—up to 30 percent, depending on the winery—and there is no corkage fee if you take a bottle of the featured wine into Sanderlings, Seascape Beach Resort’s restaurant, for dinner. Wine Wednesday is a seasonal event and runs through the end of May.

Lago di Como Special Dinner with 37th Parallel Winery

Lago di Como Ristorante & Pizzeria is putting on a special six-course dinner with the featured wines of 37th Parallel Winery, which is based in Scotts Valley. Winemaker dinners allow you to taste several different wines, paired with each course, and it’s an opportunity to learn about the winery and their wines directly from the winemakers.  This lovely event is at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2 and the cost is $66 plus tax. Call 454-8257 or visit lagodicomoristorante.com for more information. The restaurant is located at 21490 East Cliff Drive, Santa Cruz.
