2009 Zinfandel
Happy New Year! Here’s to a good 2012—complete with an abundance of fine wines from the Santa Cruz Mountains.
You might want to start with a bold and luscious Zinfandel made by Mica Raas of Mica Cellars.
Born and raised in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Raas has an intimate knowledge of the micro terroir, soil and climate that the area has to offer. “Winemaking is an art and not a science, and true perfection in winemaking is only obtained by careful management of microbial chaos,” he says.
Fresh flavors complement the view at Linwood’s Bar and Grill
Leaves were rustling in the chill wind, but inside at Linwood’s, rays of warm sunshine streamed through the windows. Looking out across the patio perched on a hill, a fir forest rises from below, and in the midday light, it seemed to stretch all the way to the shimmering bay beyond.
To the left is an arbor on which roses and wisteria bloom seasonally; the setting for many a romantic Chaminade wedding.
Moto Ohtake’s new sculpture lends beauty and motion to Santa Cruz
The newest art installation in the Heritage Plaza on Pacific Avenue in Downtown Santa Cruz is a massive kinetic sculpture, which its creator, local artist Moto Ohtake, describes as his “personal self-contained imaginary universe.” On a windy day, the new sculpture, entitled “Aero No. 7,” can be seen wildly gyrating and sending numerous disks orbiting around its base. When the winds subside the sculpture is static and calm. This seems symbolically fitting as both the universe and Downtown Santa Cruz are places that often test the relationship between chaos and order.

An exploration of publicly owned utilities
The long drawn-out saga of Pacific Gas & Electric’s controversial SmartMeter program has some in Santa Cruz looking for alternatives to the for-profit utility. One idea being floated is starting government-run municipal power companies, although there is little chance this change is on the immediate horizon.
Santa Cruz reaches out with aid for its sister city in Japan
When Alan Hiromura’s sister died from a particularly aggressive case of leukemia in December 2008, he searched for a way to commemorate her life. His opportunity eventually arose with another sister in need.
