The City of Santa Cruz Planning Commission has “indefinitely suspended” the application for a 40-unit housing complex at 1930 Ocean Street Ext. The development caused a stir earlier this fall because of its proximity to the Santa Cruz Memorial Crematory—it’s also just across the road from the cemetery—and the potential health hazards that may exist from exposure to cremation emissions, especially mercury, which is found in dental fillings, and is dangerous in even small airborne doses. A large group of neighbors were vocally opposed to the development, although more for the traffic impacts they fear it would have on the already dilapidated and impacted road. Allison Guevara, one of the neighbors spearheading the opposition, told Good Times, “While I’m glad to see them exercising caution with the mercury issue and putting the project on hold for now, my point all along has been that the infrastructure in our neighborhood is already insufficient for the amount of traffic that exists.”
