When Cheri Bianchi graduated from nursing school in 1978, she was thrilled to land a coveted job in the Stanford ICU fresh out of college.
But as she worked her way up to a role as head nurse, she noticed a troubling pattern.
“Every day I was seeing the same kinds of patients,” Bianchi recalls. “People with diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and weight-related conditions. I remember thinking, ‘Can’t we help them before they get here?’”
That pressing question would eventually lead her to found The Healthy Way, one of Santa Cruz County’s longest-running wellness businesses, now celebrating its 40th anniversary.
To mark the milestone, Bianchi and her team of experts will host an anniversary party and Health Fair on June 27, bringing together longtime clients, local wellness practitioners and community members for an afternoon of celebration, education and connection.
Bianchi’s path from critical care nurse to wellness pioneer began in the mid-1980s when she and her husband, Gary, decided to take a leap of faith. The couple purchased a franchise of the Diet Center, a nationally recognized weight-loss program with thousands of locations worldwide.
The Diet Center opened in Scotts Valley and Santa Cruz in 1988. Just two years later, Bianchi struck out on her own, rebranding the business as The Healthy Way and creating a more personalized approach to health and weight management.
“Back then, people weren’t really talking about inflammation, blood sugar stabilization or lifestyle medicine,” says Bianchi. “But I had a medical background, and I knew there had to be a connection between what people were eating and how they felt.”
Long before terms like “functional medicine,” “metabolic health” and “GLP-1 medications” entered the mainstream conversation, Bianchi was helping clients understand how balancing blood sugar could influence energy, cravings and long-term health.
Looking back, she believes The Healthy Way was way ahead of its time.
“Now we understand so much more about insulin resistance and blood sugar regulation,” she says. “When I look at the popularity of GLP-1 drugs today, I think we were addressing some of those same underlying issues decades ago through nutrition and lifestyle changes.”
What began as a weight-loss practice gradually evolved into a broader wellness center focused on sustainable health rather than quick fixes. Over the years, The Healthy Way expanded its offerings to include nutrition counseling, fitness programs, health coaching and wellness education.
“Many of the people who came to me in those early years are still connected to The Healthy Way,” Bianchi says.
Some have remained clients for decades. Others have become friends, referral partners and advocates. Together, they have witnessed the evolution of health trends, from low-fat diets to low-carb plans, from calorie counting to today’s focus on protein and metabolic health.
Through it all, Bianchi has remained committed to a simple philosophy: helping people make realistic lifestyle changes they can maintain. That community-centered approach has helped The Healthy Way weather changing nutrition trends, economic downturns and the arrival of countless competing wellness programs.
Four decades later, The Healthy Way continues to serve Santa Cruz County residents seeking practical guidance for healthier living.
The June 27 anniversary celebration reflects that mission. The event will feature wellness resources, health information, community connections and an opportunity for current and former clients to reconnect with the team that has supported their health journeys over the years.
For Bianchi, the anniversary is less about looking back and more about celebrating the people who made the journey possible.
“It’s really about the community,” she says. “The clients, families and practitioners who have been part of The Healthy Way over the years. We’ve grown together.”
And while the wellness industry has changed dramatically since Bianchi first walked the halls of Stanford Hospital, her original motivation remains remarkably intact.
Forty years ago, she wondered whether there was a way to help people stay healthy before disease took hold.
Today, she’s still answering that question, one happy client at a time.
The Healthy Way’s 40th Anniversary Party and Health Fair takes place June 27 from 12-3pm on 3251 Mission Drive, Santa Cruz. For more info and schedule of events visit: thehealthyway.us/40years
