Bright & Shining Fire
Today is May Day, an ancient Spring festival. May Day, always under the sustaining light of Taurus, is the Celtic (Gaelic) festival of Beltane, a Sun festival. May Day is also International Worker’s Day and a cross quarter day—halfway between spring and summer.

When we met up with Oliver Tree Nickell last year, the 20-year old producer and sometimes DJ was riding high from the release of his three-song EP, Demons. Nickell—who performs under his middle name—had earned the blessing of Thom Yorke to remix and record his own version of Radiohead’s “Karma Police,” was flown to England to record, and started to work on his first music video, for the song “Rabbit Hole.”

Foodie File: Ken Botelho
Ken Botelho, owner of Caffe Bene, says his coffee shop on Cedar Street has had plenty of ups and downs since it opened in 1988. But he doesn’t mind when it gets slow: in between regular customers, Botelho just picks up a book or newspaper and reads. At this point, Caffe Bene is a local institution. “I still see cars going by—the years change. The models change,” he says. “I’m still serving coffee.”
