Opportunity Fund gains new support for microloans in Santa Cruz County
Small businesses, or those with fewer than 500 employees, provide 55 percent of the total jobs in the United States and more than two-thirds of the net job growth in the country, according to the United States Small Business Administration (SBA). With this in mind, the key to rebuilding the strength of Santa Cruz County’s economy may lie in the hands of entrepreneurs and small business owners.
What have you heard from constituents of yours who—while not living in the City of Santa Cruz—are served by the city’s water department regarding the pause on plans for desalination and related water supply issues? What are you doing to make progress on the water supply problem for your district?
Many of the residents of the First District are interested in participating in the process for making long-term decisions about water use and supply in our area. Unfortunately, more than 30,000 First District residents served by the City of Santa Cruz Water District (one-third of all ratepayers) have little say in the choices that are being made.

Sin Barras calls on community to reject jail expansion grant
The Board of State and Community Corrections officially recommended yesterday, Thursday, Jan. 16, that Santa Cruz County receive a $24.8 million grant sought for expansion at the Rountree Detention Center in South County.
Holding signs with slogans such as “Invest in Jobs, Health and Education—Not Incarceration,” members of Sin Barras, Californians United for a Responsible Budget and their supporters rallied yesterday afternoon around the Clock Tower in Downtown Santa Cruz to call on the public to ask our local Board of Supervisors to reject the funds and encourage voters to tell officials “No More Money for Jails!” The grant money is provided for in Senate Bill 1022, which allocates state funding for local, adult criminal justice facilities. The Board of Supervisors has 90 days to either accept or decline the funds.
Man behind myth explored in ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom’
Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom—the latest biographical drama from Justin Chadwick (The Other Boleyn Girl)—is in many ways as thoughtful and imposing as both its subject, the formidable Nelson Mandela, and its impressive star, Idris Elba.
The real-life Mandela passed away this past December, at the age of 95, lauded and eulogized the world over as an icon of peace, humility, forgiveness and cooperation. But Mandela was far more complicated than the stoic, sagacious, grandfatherly peacemaker so beloved by the world in his later years.
Lee Daniels The Butler didn’t do it—score an Oscar nomination that is. Nor did the film’s actors, which makes it one of the more curious snubs of the 2014 Oscar season. Nominations were announced early Thursday.
American Hustle and Gravity boasted the most attention—10 noms in all for each—and Nebraska surpassed expectations, grabbing nods for Best Picture, Actor (Bruce Dern), Best Supporting Actress (the delightful June Squibb), Best Director (Alexander Payne) and Best Screenplay (Bob Nelson).
Good news for Dallas Buyers Club, the riveting period piece about an HIV-positive man in the 1980s who became an unlikely advocate for others during the AIDS crisis: The film collected six nominations, alongside Captain Phillips and Nebraska.
Other big surprises: Tom Hanks was off the Best Actor list for Captain Phillips; Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks) didn’t garner a nom; nor did Robert Redford (All Is Lost) who, surprisingly, has never taken home the gold for Best Actor.
The Best Picture race, at least for now, seems to be between American Hustle, Gravity and 12 Years a Slave (which received 9 noms).
By all accounts, it feels like an American Hustle win this year. The film did well at the Golden Globes last weekend and true, it smacks of Best Picture, but so does 12 Years a Slave. And Gravity for that matter, for more so for its ability to create such an unforgettable journey from beginning to end.
Elsewhere … it’s time to be honest: Can’t we already hear Jennifer Lawrence accepting her award on Oscar night? Or Amy Adams for that matter? But should the Academy dare to be bold this year, it would be downright refreshing to see some of the following on the this year’s list of Best Oscar winners: Matthew McConaughey or Bruce Dern (Best Actor); a tie for Best Actress (Cate Blanchett and Meryl Streep); Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club); Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine), Julia Roberts (August: Osage County) or June Squibb (Nebraska) for Best Supporting Actress; Twenty Feet From Stardom (Best Documentary): Frozen (Best Animated Feature); Before Midnight (Best Adapted Screenplay); Her or Blue Jasmine (Best Screenplay).
The Oscar telecast unfolds March 2 with Ellen DeGeneres returning for the second time as host. In the meantime, take note of some of the nominees below.

The Friends of Hospice Oktoberfest is held on the first Sunday of October every year—a wonderful event that raises much-needed funds for Hospice of Santa Cruz County. As well as a silent auction, displaying all kinds of goods to bid on, there is also an outstanding live auction which includes trips, chefs’ dinners and more. Part of the silent auction includes a huge amount of wine, with hundreds of bottles to bid on and plenty of bargains to be had. Local wineries and others from farther afield are more than generous in donating.
