Rapturous outlaw romance ‘Ain’t Them Bodies Saints’ looks great, less filling
From the Terrence Malick school of evocative visual splendor comes the outlaw romance Ain’t Them Bodies Saints. Written and directed by David Lowery, a longtime art house editor and occasional cinematographer whose work has mostly been in short films, Saints is drenched in atmosphere—artfully filtered sunlight, blue moonlight, misty dawns, heat, dust and shadows. Frame for frame, it’s often lovely to behold.

Nearly a quarter-century ago, Santa Cruz writer and filmmaker Geoffrey Dunn released a collection of his writings in a volume entitled “Santa Cruz Is in the Heart,” the first edition of which sold out in a few weeks and which has gone into a phenomenal six printings over the years. Dunn’s writings, with their unique mixture of personal reminiscences and observations, along with their revelatory accounts of regional history, capture the zeitgeist of our community as few others ever have.
Timeless and authentic, Tortilla Flats continues to impress in its 35th anniversary year
There are probably not many restaurants in Santa Cruz County that can attest to being in business for several decades, but Tortilla Flats has just logged 35 years—with owner-chef Cheryl Marquez at the helm.
Service is consistently good at Tortilla Flats. From the minute we enter the restaurant, servers buzz around making sure we have everything we need. A fresh bowl of chips and salsa appears on our table, the piquant salsa nicely presented in a little pouring jar. This place runs like a well-oiled machine.
Cabernet Franc 2008
Cabernet Franc is one of my favorite wines, and Burrell School makes a good one. The 2008 Cab Franc ($30) is a beautiful wine—made from estate grapes grown in Pichon Vineyard located on Mount Umunhum above Lexington Reservoir. With its aromas of green tea, tobacco and raspberry and lots of big fruit flavors in the mouth, this smooth wine takes Cab Franc to another level.
Along with his wife Anne, winemaker Dave Moulton started in the wine business back in the ’70s, so to say he has a ton of experience under his belt would be an understatement. I see him often at wine events—always cutting a notable figure in brightly colored pants and snazzy jackets. He’s an ebullient, forthright character—and his personality reflects in his wine, too. He makes big bold wines that are not for the weak-kneed.
Santa Cruz gets whisked away by The Mantles
An amusing thing happens when an artist releases a new record. Suddenly, there’s a mad dash to define the album and the artist themself. The xx has become synonymous with make-out music, Adele is the go-to heartbreak healer, Daft Punk brings the dance party, Robin Thicke brings the sexism—you get the idea.
So when the Oakland/San Francisco-based quintet The Mantles released its sophomore LP in June—Long Enough to Leave—the Internet was quick to label the lo-fi album (albeit the most polished and poppy Mantles release to date) as the ultimate summer soundtrack, due to jangly, glimmering guitars and forlorn, searching lyrics.
Local singer Lara Price is constantly redefining herself as an artist. “I’m always trying to grow and evolve,” she says. “I feel like I still haven’t really found my voice yet. I’m still looking for it.” In her search to find her elusive voice, Price has joined a variety of music projects. In addition to her own blues and unplugged endeavors, Price has teamed up with Militia of Love and the Santa Cruz Sirens Burlesque, and performs with Girls Got the Blues and the Velvet Plum Band. She’ll share the stage with the latter on Friday at Michael’s On Main.
The astrological week begins Thursday with Mercury opposite Chiron (seeking to heal) and Mercury inconjunct Uranus (puzzled about creating the New Era Community). We feel saddened (Chiron) at the state of our world and feeling unable to change it. Sun/Saturn tells us we have the tools for the new world. Saturn in Scorpio helps us emerge out of the Matrix of our present thinking. Here is how humanity, in turmoil, feels at present as we enter the new Aquarian world.
I think a camp would be a really good place for homeless people to have a safer place to be. I think it’s a good idea.
