I would suggest spending time in less touristy neighborhoods, such as Seabright. Catch a live show at The Rio Theatre and then head next door to Oyunna’s restaurant for some amazing Mongolian food. When downtown I’d suggest Bookshop Santa Cruz and the Museum of Art & History.

Veteran solo performer revisits childhood trauma in ambitious one-man show
When an 8-year-old Mark Kenward and his family moved from Normal, Il., to Nantucket, Mass., they did so with quintessentially great expectations. “My parents moved us to an island with all the dreams you would expect of people moving to an island,” remembers the now-adult Kenward over three decades later. “Dreams of spending summer afternoons on the beach, and just having this life that’s away from the chaos of the mainland.”
Local affiliate joins the national Move to Amend campaign aimed at reversing corporate personhood
Amending the U.S. Constitution is no small task, but that’s what the Move to Amend campaign has set out to do.
The campaign is pushing for a constitutional amendment that defines exactly what a person is (a definition in which corporations do not qualify), arguing that nothing less is necessary to restore real democracy in America.
The quest to identify sources of high levels of bacteria at Cowell Beach continues
With straight As on Heal the Bay’s annual “beach report card” for 10 out of 13 Santa Cruz County beaches—Main Beach, Seabright, and even Cowell Beach at the Stairs, to name a few—it would seem that Santa Cruz boasts a high coastal GPA. But in recent years, one Santa Cruz beach just can’t seem to pass: Cowell Beach west of the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf.

Santa Cruz Pride precedes momentous Supreme Court rulings
During the five months between June 2008, when the Supreme Court ruled equal protection for same-sex marriage in California, and November of that same year, when Proposition 8 limited legal marriages to those between a man and woman, thousands of gay couples felt a pressing urgency to attain wedlock before Election Day.
Like so many of those couples. Bob Correa, a former director of the Santa Cruz Diversity Center, and his partner of 24 years, Denny Carroll, found themselves racing the clock. Forced to forsake visions of an exciting, proper wedding, the two found themselves standing in their garage before a minister, both terribly sick with the flu, while two friends looked on.
Today they joke about the impromptu ceremony, calling it their “drive-by, garage door wedding,” Carroll says.

Time to hang up the franchise with ‘Hangover III’
It was the perfect storm of circumstances. First, the Memorial Day holiday and early deadlines; second, an attempted screening malfunction earlier in the week. And finally, the recent trend for studios to launch potential big summer movies on Thursday, rather than the traditional Friday, in hopes of inflating the “weekend” box office gross over four days (five, if the Monday happens to be a holiday), instead of the usual three.

Three’s a charm for GT Active. In our third year of Good Times Weekly’s annual magazine, we salute the great outdoors in Santa Cruz County and also take a deeper look into the area’s fitness and health scenes. What thrilled us the most, however, was giving away several tickets to a lucky local who had the opportunity to experience a one-of-a-kind helicopter ride over our lush county and ocean, only to be set down at Talbott Vineyards nearby for a wine tasting. Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing’s New Casinos IPA Beer
Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing has just launched its latest beer—called Casinos—in collaboration with the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Casinos will be available throughout the Boardwalk, at local retailers and, of course, at SCMB’s very own taproom in the Swift Street Courtyard complex.
