0

RisaNewSOver the years I’ve mentioned the nine tests of Mars and Scorpio. The tests are given to everyone—unawakened, beginning to awaken, and the awakened. The purpose is to test our strength, courage, ability to adapt, discriminate and have discernment. To see if we are deceived by illusion or are “warriors triumphant, emerging from the battle.”

lylb bmartiniRock ‘n’ roller Billy Martini doesn’t just have a band—he has a show. The distinction is important. It’s even right there in his name, the Billy Martini Show. He and his band don’t just stand up on stage playing a bunch of rock songs; they have backup dancers, costumes and audience participation.

wine glassAlthough drinking alone is not half as much fun as drinking with others, after a busy day of dashing around, I came home and poured myself a glass or two of Loma Prieta’s Pinotage 2010 (saving a bit for my husband). Stellar Corpses

He’s been marrying these two obsessions the past decade with his horror-punk group Stellar Corpses. They wear dark clothes, sport an upright bass and sing a ton of...

Float On

Relaxing in a sensory deprivation tank is like returning to the womb (sort of)  Inside the watery pod lovingly referred to as “Flo” by her owners, I open my eyes to the type of darkness usually reserved for blacked-out basements. And tombs, my brain reminds me. Though I surveyed every inch of Flo before I climbed...

Briefs: Just for Funds, Splash Dance

Just For Funds Last week’s city council meeting began with a song and dance led by the Santa Cruz Follies, but eventually devolved into audible groans of exasperation from community members. The source of unrest? The debate over campaign finance reform in Santa Cruz, which came to a thudding halt when councilmember Micah Posner’s latest campaign...
