Holiday Gift Guide 2013

0

gg-cover-2It’s a bit mind-bending to realize that 2013 has nearly breezed by and that the holidays are right in front of us. Good cheer and (hopefully) great connections with family and friends await, but, for the moment, let’s focus on the task at hand: the art of giving.

The following pages will certainly assist you with that. In our annual gift guide, we highlight more gifts than in previous years so there’s plenty from which to choose—from the vibrant offerings found at Om Gallery in Downtown Santa Cruz to the downright imaginative gift items and stocking stuffers you can find at so many other local stores. It’s all here.

You are St. Nicholas and about to hand down your legacy to the new Santa (your son or daughter). Best advice you give him/her is …?

The Monterey Bay Sanctuary Scenic Trail is now closer to becoming a reality thanks to the approval of $5.3 million in funding.

At its Thursday, Dec. 5 meeting, The Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) voted to approve $14 million in state and federal funding for 26 projects. This includes $5.3 million for three sections of what’s known colloquially as the Rail Trail. Those segments include a 2.4-mile portion from Natural Bridges Drive to the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf, a stretch from Fifth to Seventh avenues along East Cliff Drive in Twin Lakes and a portion connecting Lee Road to the slough trail system in Watsonville.

sam farr2The idea of raising the federal minimum wage has been gaining national support. Where do you stand on that issue?

It is a shame that our country has not raised the minimum wage so that all American workers can earn a livable income. When Democrats first took control of Congress after the 2006 election, we made wage reform one of our top priorities and passed the first minimum wage increase in years.

Inflation has unfortunately slowly eaten away at that raise. When adjusted for inflation, the minimum wage is now lower that it was several decades ago. If the minimum wage was indexed for inflation, it would be worth almost $11 today. Instead, the current rate of $7.25 per hour leaves workers with just $15,080 a year to pay their bills.

The Native Sibling

Ryan and Kaylee Williams have finished recording their full-length debut album—Letters Kept to Ourselves—a follow-up to their 2012 EP, Water Too Deep, Words Too Shallow. “It’s very raw,” Ryan says of the album, set for release this spring. “Kaylee and I are both very introspective writers, so there’s a lot of songs about memories, places we’ve been together and the inner workings of family and friendships.” One of the new songs, “Oh Sing,” has already received some radio play on KCRW in Los Angeles, and the duo recently released a video for “Carry You.”

film-FrozenWhat Disney Princess movies say about gender, culture and romance

What would the holidays be without a new Disney feature cartoon? With Frozen, the studio is in full “Disney Princess” mode—the line of femme-centric fairy tale movies designed to market Mattel Co. dolls, outfits and accessories to little girls, especially now, as the holiday buying season ramps up. A marketing ploy made all the more obvious when the movie is animated via CGI, and all the characters already look like plastic dolls, with their smooth, unlined skin and dimensional shading.

If you could do one thing, and knew you wouldn’t fail, what would it be? Why?

Countering the Darkness

RisaNewS

It’s a busy upcoming week of feast days, rituals and festivals. Rituals (of goodness, gratitude and giving) counter the season’s darkness, framing it in light. Each day of Christian Liturgy is a saint’s day, celebrating the life of one who exhibited deep spiritual presence and actions in the world (like Nelson Mandela). Each saint’s day is a day of Light. We are the saints of our present day. The new and full moon festivals are “days of light.” They “counter” the present day darkness of materiality that has overtaken the world in clever and unseen ways. Rituals focus our minds, create a centripetal force, turn us inward, anchoring the Soul into our daily lives. This week has many festivals of remembrance and of light.

Civinomics Rising

GT121213Since its recent groundbreaking event, Civinomics’ online users are posting their own civic initiatives for the community to vote on. Where will digital governance take Santa Cruz?

Just three weeks after Civinomics launched a well-attended local public event dubbed “Civinomicon” at its Cruzio headquarters, the fledgling startup in Downtown Santa Cruz finds itself boldly moving forward with a unique mission to drastically modernize civic engagement. Its two founders, Manu Koenig and Robert Singleton, both in their twenties, describe their endeavor as “an experiment in digital governance,” but if their early signs of success are any indication of the possibilities that lie ahead, the “experiment” may generate a variety of new and, perhaps, different, kinds of civic conversations locally.
