The Soul and Spiritual Task of the United States

RisaNewSSunday is Fall Equinox with Sun entering Libra. Autumn and winter emphasize the Soul. “Destiny of the Nations,” by Alice Bailey (scribe for the Tibetan Teacher Djwhal Khul) refers to the Soul purpose of the United States. I quote from the book in the light of the Syrian situation.

film ThereseTatou shines as pre-feminist desperate housewife in ‘Thèrése’

Audrey Tatou continues to grow in complexity onscreen. In the handsome and elegantly mounted period drama, Thèrése, the former Amelie gamine stars as a young woman entangled in bourgeois dynastic obligations in the southwest French countryside in the 1920s. It’s a part that calls for brisk intelligence, but not much warmth, quiet desperation, and a soupçon of cold fury, and Tatou plays every note with striking precision.

GTW091213In GT’s Living Legends series, one of the most revered spiritual teachers on the planet opens up about self-inquiry and much more. PLUS: The impetus behind her return to Santa Cruz after 20 years.

Stop for a moment; notice what you’re thinking. Where do thoughts come from? What is present when there are no thoughts? This direct questioning is called self-inquiry. It’s an ancient and profound action that, according to many spiritual leaders, brings us in direct contact with what is rather than clinging to concepts that represent what is.

Does a hamburger come from a farm?

It’s a surprisingly complex question, and one that youth who pass through the Live Earth Farm Discovery Program (LEFDP) have thoughtfully explored. The nonprofit’s 10 different programs provide farm-based education and activities for infants through teenagers, and the questions posed—such as the aforementioned quandary about the origins of a hamburger—vary in depth depending on the age group.

By Josie Cowden When visiting Dan and Pat Lester’s property, one is greeted by acres and acres of glorious vineyards. Around this time of year, grapes not already harvested are heavy and luscious. It’s a beautiful sight to behold and it’s obvious that some outstanding wines are going to be produced from this voluptuous fruit.

RisaNewSThis is a potent week leading up to Wednesday, Sept. 18 when a Yod, Finger (Will, Direction) of God (sextile and two inconjuncts) points to the Gemini rising and Uranus of the United States’ chart.
We’re standing at a gateway of the new world, the new age, the new civilization’s new ideas and culture. Saturn in Scorpio offers us opportunities to reorient from the solar plexus (separations) to the heart (unity), and to bring about the needed changes leading to the Path of Return.

Way back when they first started jamming with one another, the members of Santa Cruz reggae-punk outfit The Expendables used to joke that each member of the band could easily be replaced.

“We were all pretty bad at our instruments when we first started playing, and we would always call each other ‘expendable,'” recalls Adam Patterson, the band’s drummer and vocalist. But if The Expendables have proven anything over the course of the 15 years they’ve been writing and performing music, it’s that they are anything but a throwaway band.

ae Arcadia1Stoppard’s ambitious ‘Arcadia’ launches new JTC season

Tom Stoppard’s plays are not for the intellectually faint of heart. In his dazzling and accomplished “Arcadia,” the playwright’s roving mind and lively wit concoct a densely-packed thematic narrative touching on mathematics and physics, English history and culture, landscape gardening, the Romantic movement, academic infighting, Lord Byron, and, of course, sex and literature. It’s a long, smart, frequently funny play, and Jewel Theatre Company enhances its reputation for ambitious productions by staging “Arcadia” to kick off its ninth season.
