Scotts Valley’s Jia Tella’s offers diverse tastes and plenty of history
Often when dining out, I reach a satiety point, enjoy another bite or two, and take the rest of the meal home. Occasionally however, that bite or two turns into three, four, or more, as I just can’t seem to get enough of the array of unique flavors. That was my experience at Jia Tella’s, the Cambodian restaurant tucked into a corner of the neighborhood mall that houses Scotts Valley Market.
On Sundays, Café Sparrow dishes up a delectable breakfast and brunch menu, peppered with house-made surprises in its little Aptos storefront.
Thursday is the 237th birthday of the United States (Declaration of Independence) formed under the liberating sign of Cancer (Ray 2 of Divine Intelligence, equalized economics, intelligent thinking humanity). The United States continues to experience economic changes and transformation in the coming months. The astrology of change (of the Ages) experienced within the United States coincides with the failing of the (old) economic structures worldwide. It looks like breakdown everywhere in the world. When there is breakdown, there is a simultaneous release of energy, which produces new opportunities for the creation of a new world. We are in this time now. Things are very unusual and unpredictable, irregular, capricious and at times random. The rules, archetypes and templates of life are changing as we stand in between times and ages.
Cabrillo Stage’s summer season opens with flashy, yet heartfelt ‘La Cage Aux Folles’
La Cage Aux Folles” debuted as a French play in 1973, was made into a film in 1978, and was adapted into a musical in the U.S. in 1983. In 1997, it was reproduced as a comedy film—sans the music—titled The Birdcage, starring Robin Williams, Nathan Lane and Gene Hackman. And on July 12, local audiences will have an opportunity to see the play re-imagined once again, this time by Cabrillo Stage.
Santa Cruzans look ahead after Supreme Court decisions on Prop. 8 and DOMA
The Supreme Court’s recent same-sex marriage rulings weren’t landslide victories for LGBT Americans, says Sharon Papo, executive director of The Diversity Center in Santa Cruz, but they were momentous steps forward.
“It’s a great day,” Papo told GT on Wednesday, June 26, the day of the court’s rulings, “but there are still 37 states that treat gay and lesbian Americans and their children as second-class citizens. We are celebrating, but there is still work to be done.”
The City of Santa Cruz puts its bicycle distribution program on hold
For the past 17 years, the City of Santa Cruz has distributed bicycles recovered by police to underprivileged youth through local nonprofits.
But the program—which has been consumed in the last year by controversy over which organization gets to middleman the bike handoffs—is currently on hold until police and city staff implement a new system.
When it comes to potentially regulating marijuana-growing operations, what do you think the county’s role should be?
I think county government needs to play an active role in regulating marijuana-growing operations in the unincorporated area of the county. Although this is a confused and contradictory area of law at the current time, county regulation is important for a number of reasons.
