NOEL COWARD’S BLITHE SPIRIT “Till death do us part.” Everyone knows those words from the traditional marriage ceremony, but these days, how many people actually mean them? That’s the question centered around Noel Coward’s zany Blithe Spirit, when author Charles Condomine goes to a medium and accidentally conjures the spirit of his dead first wife. Originally performed in 1941, this paranormal farce still relates to audiences today with its themes of love, loyalty and what to do when the deceased just won’t stay dead. AMERICANA
CHRIS ACKER New Orleans singer-songwriter Chris Acker has spent four albums learning to turn the unremarkable into something worth sitting with. Churning together wit and woes into honest, tradition-filled blues. On The American Songster, Acker is painfully honest in his lyricism and quietly brilliant in his disheveled yet all too detailed poetry. With his warm and warbly voice, Acker details every part of his day and in doing so, comforts the listener in the relatability of the human condition. Chris Acker stays attuned to a classic Americana folk sound with lilting rhythm guitar, banjo, ricocheting drums, and whispers of fiddle, piano, and flute. SN

LITERATURE
THE FLYING DEATH Historian and professor Matt O’Hara urges readers of his book The Flying Death to ask, “Who and what are we willing to sacrifice in the name of discovery and profit?” From the Amazon Rainforest to United States corporate boardrooms, O’Hara tells the story of Richard Gill, who was sick and desperate for a cure. He hoped curare, a poisonous vine, could help. He traveled to the Amazon, connected with native people, ran rogue medical trials, and played politics. All his work led to the curare-industrial complex and a Nobel Prize. He did this for his survival and in the name of profits and discovery. ISABELLA MARIE SANGALINE
