2010 is upon us and with it comes the promise of plenty of amazing comic related events. From the annual conventions to a slew of new movies, it’s looking like we comic fans have nothing to worry about as the trend of the last decade looks to continue into the next with yet another awesome year. While we still have a little while to wait for all of the major info that the coming convention season always delivers, I’ve gone ahead and tossed together a top five countdown of the most exciting things we can expect:
DC and Marvel Play Nice? – It looks like the comic landscape is about to experience a radical alteration when the 2 heavies lay on a friendlier, more approachable aesthetic to their respective universes in the next few months. Given the tendency to lean toward the dark and gritty for the past 25 years or so, I’d say it’s about time for the breath of fresh air.

Free Comic Book Day – Who’s capable of not being excited about free comics!? Not me, that’s for sure. This year’s list has, as usual, lots of goodies to look forward to (War of the Supermen #0 anyone? Yes, please). Click on the full list and mark your calendars for May 1st when you can score these awesome giveaways.
More Comic Book Movies! – I’m just as excited as anyone else about the upcoming Iron Man 2, but there are plenty of other adaptations headed to the silver screen in the next 12 months. Director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead) tackles the scene with indie favorite Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Michael Cera’s cast in the lead as this flick centers around a young boy taking on (and battling) his girlfriend’s 7 evil ex-boyfriends. There’s also the long awaited Jonah Hex movie featuring Josh Brolin playing the scarred up anti-hero as well asThe Losers and Kick-Ass. The latter of which I personally can’t wait for as the red band trailer is all kinds of cool (also, who doesn’t want to see Superbad’s McLovin’ get his crime-fighting action on?).
Conventions – Of course, con season is ALWAYS something to look forward to. Between tearing through back issue bins to fill those holes in your collection and rubbing elbows with your favorite creators and movie stars while snagging some autographs, it’s like a weekend long Christmas for fanboys!
DC: Earth One – Good God, this is the big one. Laying the potential groundwork for the future of comic book distribution, Earth One on the surface appears to be content wise, DC’s answer to Marvel’s ultimate universe, but it’s so much more than that. Instead of the usual month to month wait between issues, DC is looking to capitalize on the success of the trade paperback over the fairly expensive individual issues by releasing thick volumes several times a year full of all new original content. Personally, I’m totally on board with this approach and if it’s any indication of the surprises that this new decade has in store for us, I’d say the that we have a LOT to look forward to.
