Dance floor powerhouse Delhi 2 Dublin turns over new leaf, gets serious
Tarun Nayar is proud that his band, Delhi 2 Dublin, has a sound that is hard to classify. Hour Magazine once called the Vancouver-based group—which combines elements of hip-hop, electronic, Bhangra and Celtic music into a danceable amalgam—“The United Nations of rock ’n’ roll,” but that only seems to scratch the surface of what makes this quintet so dynamic.
It’s been a bumpy road so far for Santa Cruz band Stomping Grounds. “All our recording equipment is in our garage, and in the middle of the night a pipe burst in our water heater and sprayed all our music equipment,” says Antonio Anzaldua, the band’s vocalist/guitarist. But despite this setback, the rock and soul group remains undaunted in its quest to record a full-length album.
My husband and I celebrated our anniversary last month and spent the weekend in one of our favorite nearby getaways—Carmel.
This time we stayed in a newly re-opened boutique inn called Vendange, meaning “late harvest” in French, which is very close to the town center—and it could not have been better. The place is spotless, beautifully decorated, comes with a nice breakfast, and offers a wine and cheese tasting every evening.
Local startup Civinomics aims to fundamentally change the way we participate civically
Last weekend, it appears that the landscape of political and civic engagement—an activity for which many citizens of this country have developed a healthy sense of cynicism—just took one big bounding leap into the 21st century.
A three-day community event, called “Civinomicon,” brought more than 100 people to Cruzio downtown, where the young startup called Civinomics aims to make civic action, organization and, eventually, crowd funding, as intuitive as networking online with friends.
It’s time to understand the Sun in and Light of the Archer, Sagittarius— sign of abundance, of sharing food, good cheer, things bountiful, adventuresome and expansive. What are the characteristics of this sign? Sagittarius is musician, publisher, adventurer and lover of food. Sagittarius, a fire sign, adapts to changing conditions, inspires others to take action. Always on a journey, filled with optimism (Jupiter’s influence), Sag is the wanderer, optimist and archer—setting goals, reaching those goals, setting new goals. Ambivalent to the social order of things, Sag, unable to be restricted, values, above all, personal freedom.
Local chef Jonathan Miller offers advice for a stress-free Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is just days away, and for the person in charge of cooking the meal, that means one thing: pressure. Pressure to beat other shoppers to the same essential ingredients. Pressure to appease guests with different tastes and dietary needs. Pressure to cook several items simultaneously and get the timing just right.
Local fantasy series author, June M. Pace, is living her wildest dreams
June M. Pace has never eaten a taco. It was unheard of in her hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. By choice, she’s never had a sip of Coke. Same goes for Oreos—she never cared for chocolate. In fact, as a teenager in Los Angeles, she and a friend would buy a snow cone and a Heath Bar every day during the summer. Pace looked forward to eating the slender block of toffee—only after the self-dubbed “vanilla freak” peeled off every bit of milk chocolate to give to her friend.
