SSC1SSC’s well-acted ‘Wonderful Life’ a bittersweet finale

It’s been a turbulent year for Shakespeare Santa Cruz, since UC Santa Cruz officially pulled the plug on the company this summer, after 32 years of dynamic local theater. For the grand finale of its 2013 season—and possibly forever, at least in its present incarnation—SSC joins with the UCSC Theater Department for its annual holiday co-production. This year, they present “It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play,” Joe Landry’s popular 1997 play in which the beloved Frank Capra Christmas movie is reimagined as a radio drama being broadcast live, ca. 1946.

neal-coonertyWhat is on the horizon for the old Cemex Corp. cement plant, in Davenport? Are there any plans being developed for the site?

The Davenport cement plant ceased operations in 2009 after more than 100 years of existence. The cement plant property is still owned by Cemex Corp, which is headquartered in Monterrey, Mexico.

Last year Cemex sold more than 8,000 acres of its forested property adjacent to the cement plant to a coalition of land trusts who plan to keep that acquisition as open space, and someday hope to provide access to this magnificent piece of property to the public.

filmMcConaughey’s crusading AIDS patient powers ‘Dallas Buyers Club’

It’s hard to imagine a less likely crusader in the fight against AIDS than Ron Woodroof. A coke-snorting, womanizing, blue-collar Texan, Woodroof was diagnosed as HIV-positive in the mid-1980s and given 30 days to live—a death sentence he defied for years to become a pioneer in making “unapproved” drugs from out of the country available to his local AIDS community. It’s a true story that unspools as a tale of bizarre alliances and unexpected heroism in the pugnacious, yet affecting drama, Dallas Buyers Club.
