blog spokesman1Local teen punk outfit Spokesman has big sound, big plans

Spokesman has the energy and sound of a band that has been playing together for years—except three of the members will be juniors in high school next year, and another will be attending college in the fall. “We all started joining bands in middle school,” says lead singer Austin Corona. “We all ended up together in this band by common musical goals and inspirations. We’re inspired by The Clash, Gaslight Anthem, Pink Floyd, and Black Flag, among many others.”

GTW062713‘High art’ takes on new meaning in ‘Weed Museum,’ a pictorial tribute to Santa Cruz’s favorite plant.

At the beginning of this month, comedian Bill Maher succinctly summed up the issue of marijuana prohibition. “Pot is the new gay marriage,” he proclaimed. “And by that, I mean it’s the next obvious civil rights issue that needs to fall.” Maher went on to say, “Gay barriers fell when Americans realized gays were their neighbors, their friends, their family members, their co-workers. Certainly, that must also be true of potheads.”

When it comes to indie rappers, it’s not that uncommon to find MC’s who rhyme on top of their own beats. That’s not the case with Sage Francis—the Providence, R.I., wordsmith decided more than a decade ago to shop his beats out to other producers. Still, Paul “Sage” Francis picks up plenty of DIY cred in his choice of management.

“I’ve always been the guy who handles almost everything,” Francis says over the phone from his New England home. Without a publicist, arranging an interview with Francis is as simple as sending him an email through his website. “I know how things need to happen and almost no one else does. If you want it done right, you have to do it yourself.”

music LYLB-The ShapesSWhen it comes to finding inspiration for their songs, Ashley Lloyd Thompson and Alex Thompson—who sing, write and play guitars in the band The Shapes—can look just about anywhere. “A lot of our songs are inspired by our environment, whether that’s the natural environment that we’re surrounded by here in Santa Cruz or longing for that environment,” Alex says. “We’ve written a few love songs too, and a couple of duets that revolve around hope or love.”

Steve Storrs knows how to produce a good Chardonnay. Steve and his wife Pam are making some of the best Chardonnays around, and, I’m glad to say, they’re easily available and are carried on many a store’s shelf and on restaurants’ wine lists.

A tantalizing smoky smell was carried by the breeze through the brewing room’s open door, drawing me zombie-like toward the source of the aroma. In the parking lot behind Santa Cruz Aleworks, Executive Chef Jeff Greer was just finishing up the day’s batch of smoked meats. Facing Pogonip in an industrial park in the Harvey West neighborhood since 2007, the brewery has recently added a delicatessen which is open daily.

Bike Heist

Amidst backdrop of increasing bike thefts, failing to register a bicycle makes recovery unlikely

Perhaps the most miserable moment a bicycle owner can experience—at least of those that don’t involve bodily injury—is discovering that their bike has been stolen. Maybe all that remains is the cable lock, snipped and dangling limply. Or perhaps a lone tire, standing upright in the bike rack.

What’s the best and the worst thing that could come out of assisting Syria?

The worst is clear, getting bogged down in a long civil war and spending another decade with American boots on the ground. And the best would be to be able to stop the conflict and let Syrians live in peace.

Wei Wei emigrated from China to the United States more than 30 years ago as an international student. Now she is a Fellow of the Special Libraries Association and the former Engineering Librarian at UC Santa Cruz, but she admits that, due to cultural differences, it took her almost 30 years to feel like the U.S., and particularly the West Coast, was home.
