Spokesman has the energy and sound of a band that has been playing together for years—except three of the members will be juniors in high school next year, and another will be attending college in the fall. “We all started joining bands in middle school,” says lead singer Austin Corona. “We all ended up together in this band by common musical goals and inspirations. We’re inspired by The Clash, Gaslight Anthem, Pink Floyd, and Black Flag, among many others.”

Although the band has only played a few shows, they have already received radio play on 98.7 FM in Los Angeles. Their first single, “We Are The Ones,” has an edgy, fast-paced tempo and puts a fresh spin on classic punk rock.

With a distinctive sound that sets them apart from other bands seeking the spotlight and a strong drive to succeed, the band’s future looks bright. “We are working on recording an album in August, and filming a music video around the same time,” says guitarist Matt Davidson. “We are hoping to go on a West Coast tour as soon as we possibly can. In five years, I can see us going on a nationwide tour.”

On Saturday, June 29, Spokesman will get one step closer to its goal with a performance at The Crepe Place. The band will share the stage with The Atomic Aces and Psychos in Love. “It’s going to be a high energy show,” says bass player Avery Murphy. “We’re all beyond stoked.”

“Our parents bought nearly everything off of the merchandise table last show,” jokes drummer Grae Zimmerman. “We hope to make music that people enjoy listening to, and to be able to see those people come to our shows.”

Spokesman plays at 9 p.m. Saturday, June 29 at The Crepe Place, 1134 Soquel Ave., Santa Cruz. Tickets are $8. For more information, call 429-6994.
