QUESTION OF THE WEEK

What’s the story behind your Halloween costume?

NICK
NICK

I’m a perennial wizard, one day a year. This costume was homemade like 40 years ago. I love coming downtown for the kids for a couple hours, then coming down at night. I like taking pictures. I’ll sit under a light and take a lot of pictures.

I’ve liked Beetlejuice since I was a kid, but this is my first time being him. I get to be silly and spooky and just have fun with it. I own the costume now, so I could be Beetlejuice again. Nobody’s said “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice” to me yet, but it’s still early. We’ll find out.

NICO

I’m Lydia from Beetlejuice. I loved the Beetlejuice cartoon as a kid, and Lydia was the star, so why not? It came on after the movie, probably in the ’90s. Our little girl is a sandworm.

Nico Saich-Gutierrez, 38, artist

JESSICA

I asked my son if he wanted to dress up, and he said, “Yeah, but I want to be a pirate.” So we’re pirates! What I like about being a pirate is the rum. But not right now, because I have to drive.

MIKE

I’m Aang from Avatar: The Last Airbender. I got this costume at Spirit Halloween at the Capitola Mall a few years back, and the rest is face paint. My daughter painted the arrow. This is the third time I’ve worn this costume already. It’s a good costume for a bald guy.

My friends and I are doing Spider-Verse characters. I’m Miles Morales, my friend is Gwen and my other friend is Peter Parker. I’ve always loved Spider-Man. I like different costumes every year and try to make them myself and be more creative. I bought the suit, but I thrifted everything else.
